After a relatively uneventful week (besides a visit to the Frida Kahlo exhibit here in Brussels which was FANTASTIC) I spent my Friday and Saturday visiting LUXEMBOURG which is just a short 2 1/2 hour train ride from Brussels!
On top of Luxembourg City being absolutely GORGEOUS, with a beautiful and clean city located in a green, misty, and hilly landscape, there were several highlights to the visit (which included three other girls and myself)
1) For the first time in my life I got to hear Luxembourgish, the local language. We visited the McDonald's in the downtown, and all I can say is that I'm happy people there have taken initiative to put French, German, and English on their menus as well because Luxembourgish is the most interesting language I've ever heard. Apparently it's a mixture of French and German...or something.
2) We were serenaded by an accordion player/opera singer in the city center. He was EXTREMELY talented, and also loved when we stopped to watch and proceeded to devote an entire song to "the Americans."
3) This morning we went to Dunkirk and after stopping in a pastry shop to ask for directions were given FREE croissants covered with chocolate. The Luxembourgers are SO nice!
4) Visited a CASTLE in Vianden, which has been restored from mediaeval times and is situated on top of a giant cliff (literally). It was a bit of a hike up the the hill on the cobblestone streets, but the views from the Castle were gorgeous, as was the castle itself.
I highly recommend a short visit to this tiny country if you ever make your way to Europe--it really is stunning. Hope you like the picture I took of the city!!
