Presentations, Pink Umbrellas, and Spartacus

Just got back yesterday from my class trip to Trier, Germany!
The trip started out with a bang with our fearless tour guide announcing "This trip is going to get really strange."
She then had to clarify that this was because we would be visiting sites from all areas of history- from Roman times to World War II, because her announcement just got everyone very confused. And very giggly.
On the way to Trier we stopped off at both the American and German World War II cemeteries in Luxembourg. Both places were very pretty but very distinctive from one another. The American one was very similar to Arlington in Washington DC, with a monument in the middle and lines of white gravestones. The German cemetery was much more gothic looking with a giant stone cross in the middle and hidden back in a wooded area. Also on this stop I got to do a presentation on the Battle of the Bulge. Everyone in our group has had to do these type of presentations on our various trips. Because our tour guide/fearless leader love to talk, she also wants to make sure we talk a lot in our presentation too, meaning they're usually EXTREMELY long because she want everyone to add more and more information. These presentation are also often in semi-awkward locations (like in a church where everyone is supposed to be silent). In Amsterdam one of the girls had to do her presentation on our canal tour boat and about halfway through the REAL tour guide was ready to start talking, so he gave her his microphone while our group + everyone ELSE on the tour listened to her presentation. haha.
My presentation wasn't TOO bad. I got to stand in front of a map that outlined various WWII maneuvers. However, after I started my presentation it started POURING rain. At this point I had to stop and pull out my embarassingly pink and polka-dotted umbrella, and then our teacher came and held it over my head while I had to continue talking for a good 15 minutes. Needless to say it was an experience.

Trier is actually a cool town because it was the second capital of the Roman Empire along with Constantinople. fun fact! While we were they're we visited the Porta Nigra (the old gate to the city in Roman times), Roman baths, and a Roman Amphitheater. It's wierd to think that these things have been standing for thousands of years!
To top off our trip, we watched "Spartacus" on our bus ride home. Insistent that every minute of our trips be a learning experience, our fearless leader introduced the film for probably ten minutes, and once the music for intermission started playing (it's an old movie) She took the bus microphone and spoke over the music.
"Now, many of you may notice there are some famous actors and actresses in dis movie...tell me eef de movie comes back on by the way...and as you can see Sparticus was a slave and den he was fighting as a gladiator and you see all these famous actors and this one actor was famous and he didn't have a very big part so dey had to extend it for him..and is de movie back on? oh wait...yes? Ok well good"

Needless to say, my third (and probably final) trip to Germany was a great experience! You can see Heidi and me sporting our umbrellas in front of the Roman baths in the above picture!
